AFM Cantilever Calibration Under Heavy Load
Researchers have pursued techniques for calibrating AFM cantilevers for 20 years. In this time, a significant number of calibration techniques have been published. Existing calibration techniques performed in liquid yield stiffness estimations that can vary from the values determined in air by over 25%. The development of a technique that can be performed in liquid environments can potentially save researchers time and money and it has the potential to enable advances to lab-on-a-chip technologies using microcantilever force sensors. In this presentation, a cantilever calibration technique will be presented that has been designed specifically for liquid environments. The modeling techniques that led to its development will be described along with the actual calibration algorithm used to automatically execute the strategy. Finally, the steps required for a typical AFM user to implement this technique will be presented to facilitate its adoption.
